Originally money was backed by gold and silver, so that you could literally trade your paper currency for grains of gold or silver. That ended with President Nixon. Even coins today from the Roman Empire still hold value due to their metallurgic content. It actually costs 4 cents today to manufacture a single penny, and 14 cents per nickel. Go figure! President Trump is trying to get rid of pennies.

Approximately 38 million Americans lived at or below the poverty level in 2021, which is about 11.6% of the population. Additionally, many more are considered near poverty, with incomes less than twice the poverty threshold, indicating a significant number of people facing economic insecurity.
